JONG, Piet (Petrus Josef Sietse de)

(1915– )
   Politician. Having studied at the Royal Naval Institute in Den Helder, de Jong entered the Dutch Navy in 1934. After the invasion of the Nether lands by Nazi Germanyin 1940, he went to England and became the commander of a submarine during World WarII. After 1948, he was an expert advisor to several politicians. De Jong was a member of the Katholieke Volkspartij (KVP, Catholic People’s Party) and was a secretary and later (naval) defenseminister from 1959 to 1963. From 1967 to 1971, he was prime minister, after which he was member of the First Chamber of Parliament until 1974.
